N-pentane

N-pentane is a five-carbon straight-chain alkane and one of the most widely used industrial hydrocarbon solvents. Its high volatility and excellent solvency make it the material of choice for foaming, polymerization and desorption processes.

1. Primary blowing agent for expandable polystyrene (EPS) and extruded polystyrene (XPS) rigid foams — often blended with isopentane to tune foaming speed.
2. Polymerization solvent for high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene catalyst systems.
3. Molecular sieve desorption and activation in gas purification units.
4. Laboratory solvent and gas chromatography reference material.
5. Component of low-temperature thermometers and specialty cooling formulations.
