2-Ethylhexanol is an organic compound,Colorless flammable liquid with special odorwith the molecular formula C8H18O.
It is soluble in about 720 times of water and miscible with most organic solvents. It is dangerous to cause combustion when exposed to high heat, open flame or contact with oxidants. If exposed to high heat, the internal pressure of the container increases, and there is a risk of cracking and explosion. It can form an explosive mixture with air. It can accumulate static electricity and ignite its vapor.
Preparation method:
The acetaldehyde condensation method is to first condense two molecules of ethanol to form butanol aldehyde, and then dehydrate to form crotonaldehyde (crotonaldehyde). Crotonaldehyde is hydrogenated to obtain n-butyraldehyde; n-butyraldehyde is further hydrogenated to obtain n-butanol; if it is condensed and dehydrated, 2-ethylhexenaldehyde is generated, and further hydrogenation is obtained to obtain the final product 2-ethylhexanol. Alternatively, a high-pressure carbonyl synthesis method is used to synthesize n-butyraldehyde and isobutyraldehyde using propylene, carbon monoxide and hydrogen as raw materials and tetracarbonyl hydrogen cobalt as a catalyst. n-Butyraldehyde and isobutyraldehyde are hydrogenated using copper or nickel as a catalyst. n-Butyraldehyde is hydrogenated in the gas phase or solid phase to produce n-butanol; after initial distillation, it is purified in a two-tower distillation system to obtain n-butanol. n-Butanol is condensed and dehydrated using sodium hydroxide as a catalyst to obtain 2-ethylhexenaldehyde. 2-Ethylhexenaldehyde is hydrogenated in the presence of a nickel catalyst at a certain temperature and pressure to obtain iso-2-ethylhexanol.
Use:
- Mainly used in the production of plasticizers, the main products are: dioctyl phthalate (DOP), dioctyl oxalate (DOA), trioctyl trimellitate (TOTM), and ester plasticizers and cold-resistant auxiliary plasticizers of dicarboxylic acids such as phthalic acid, azelaic acid, and sebacic acid.
- It can be used as a defoamer for white latex, but its foam breaking and foam suppression capabilities are poor.
- When this product is used to prepare a mixed solvent for nitro spray paint, it can prevent the paint film from turning white.
- This product is an excellent solvent and can be used in paper sizing, latex, photography, etc.
- It is also used to produce surfactants, dispersants, lubricants, emulsifiers, antioxidants, mineral processing agents, mercerizing agents, and petroleum additives, etc.
- As a permitted edible flavoring, it is also commonly used in baked foods, frozen dairy products, and puddings.
Storage method:
1.Store in a cool, ventilated warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat sources. Store separately from oxidants, acids, etc. and avoid mixed storage. Equip with firefighting equipment of corresponding types and quantities. The storage area should be equipped with leakage emergency treatment equipment and appropriate containment materials.
- Transportation precautions:
Railway transportation should be strictly in accordance with the dangerous goods loading table in the “Dangerous Goods Transportation Rules” of the Ministry of Railways. Before transportation, check whether the packaging container is complete and sealed. During transportation, ensure that the container does not leak, collapse, fall, or damage. It is strictly forbidden to mix and transport with oxidants, acids, edible chemicals, etc. The transport vehicle must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, otherwise other items shall not be transported. When shipping, the loading location should be away from bedrooms and kitchens, and isolated from engine rooms, power supplies, fire sources, etc. When transporting by road, follow the prescribed route and do not stop in residential areas and densely populated areas.
