Expandable Polystyrene

About Our EPS Products

Expandable Polystyrene (EPS) is polystyrene resin in bead form, impregnated with 4–7% pentane blowing agent. Steamed, the beads expand 20–50 times into the closed-cell foam that insulates buildings, protects electronics in transit and fills structural voids at almost no weight. Our EPS products are engineered to deliver exceptional performance, durability and cost-efficiency across packaging, construction, insulation and more — made from high-quality raw materials, with excellent shock absorption, thermal insulation and lightweight structural support as standard outcomes.

How EPS Is Made: from Styrene to Bead to Block

The chain starts with styrene monomer, polymerized in suspension to grow polystyrene beads while a pentane blowing agent — typically our n-pentane/isopentane blend — diffuses into the beads during the polymerization. The finished beads are sieved into fractions and coated. At the converter, the classic three-stage process follows: pre-expansion in steam (beads foam to the target density), aging in ventilated silos for 4–24 hours (air diffuses in, pressure equalizes), and molding in block or shape molds under steam, fusing the expanded beads into the final geometry. The blend ratio behind all of this is a science of its own — our pentane blend-ratio guide covers it in depth.

Properties That Explain the Economics

  • Thermal insulation: thermal conductivity around 0.033–0.040 W/m·K at 10–30 kg/m3 — the trapped air does the work; no other material delivers it at comparable cost.
  • Mechanical protection: compressive strength scaling with density (roughly 60–150 kPa at 10% deformation across 15–30 kg/m3) absorbs and distributes shock.
  • Weight: 95–98% air; a 20 kg/m3 block is literally lighter than firewood, which cuts freight on both inbound and outbound logistics.
  • Water resistance: closed cells barely absorb moisture, preserving insulation value in ground contact.
  • Processability: cuts, mills, laminates and hot-wires into any shape with commodity equipment.
  • Recyclability: mechanically recyclable into new beads, picture frames and molding applications; take-back schemes operate across the industry.

Applications in Depth

Building Insulation

Earned-in decades of construction practice: EPS boards insulate roofs, walls and floors, and anchor external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS). Density selection matches duty — 15 kg/m3 for general wall insulation, 20–30 kg/m3 under render systems and floor loading, higher grades under screeds and plazas. Long-term R-value stability, freeze-thaw resistance and cost set the default specification for cost-driven construction worldwide.

Protective Packaging

Molded EPS end caps, corner blocks and full enclosures protect appliances, electronics, furniture and fragile industrial parts through global logistics. Design freedom plus energy absorption at grams of weight makes it the benchmark against which every alternative packaging material is priced.

Lost-Foam Casting

Foundries mold EPS patterns, coat them in refractory, and pour metal directly — the foam vaporizes and is replaced by the casting. Complex geometries that would need cores and machining come out near-net-shape, and the pattern material cost is trivial.

Geotechnical and Civil Uses

Lightweight EPS fill replaces soil where weight would overload weak ground — road embankments on soft clays, bridge approaches, stadium seating platforms. Geofoam blocks at 20 kg/m3 cut loads by orders of magnitude versus fill soil.

Void Fill and Display

Void forms under slabs on expansive soils, expansion joints, insulated shipping boxes for pharma and food, display and stage props — the miscellany where cheap, light, insulating and shapeable wins.

Choosing Beads: the Practical Selection Guide

Bead selection runs on four dials. Target density (10–50 kg/m3) sets mechanical and thermal performance. Bead size fraction sets surface quality — small beads for thin sections and smooth skins, large beads for thick blocks. Pentane content and blend set expansion energy — matched to process and season as covered in our blend article. Special grades — flame-retardant formulations for construction codes — complete the range. Our technical desk maps these dials to your press and product, then the supply program locks the winning recipe.

Sustainability and Regulatory Context

EPS’s environmental story is genuinely two-sided, and honest specifiers treat it that way. In use: EPS insulation repays its embodied energy many times over through heating savings, and modern blowing-agent pentanes carry negligible ozone-depletion potential and near-single-digit global warming potential — a story our pentane vs HFC comparison documents. At end of life: mechanical recycling streams operate wherever collection economics allow, and design-for-disassembly improves them. Flame-retardant construction grades meet national fire classes; verify the destination market’s current code requirements when specifying.

Packaging, Storage and Supply

Beads ship in 25 kg bags or 800/850 kg jumbo bags with container loading plans (17 t in 20′ containers with bag selection, up to 26 t in 40′). Store cool and sealed — pentane migrates out of warm, open bags, aging the material. First-in-first-out discipline keeps pre-expansion behavior consistent. Every lot ships with a COA covering bead size, pentane content, density after foaming and melt flow.

Why Source EPS from Dongying EastChem

Strong market price competitiveness from optimized production and economies of scale; fast delivery and reliable supply from well-stocked, streamlined logistics engineered for urgent demands; certified quality meeting strict national standards; and after-sales support that treats your molding line as our problem too. We are a 19-year chemical manufacturer with three subsidiaries — the same house that supplies your styrene monomer and pentane blowing agents — which means the entire EPS value chain from monomer to molded block sits under one quality system and one invoice when you want it. MOQ one 20-foot container, samples about 2 days, T/T or L/C.

Density-to-Application Mapping

Because EPS properties scale with density, the fastest way to specify is a density-to-duty map. Around 10–12 kg/m3: void fill, packaging dunnage, display — minimum cost per volume. Fifteen kg/m3: general packaging for electronics and appliances, shock absorption with light weight. Twenty kg/m3: the construction workhorse for wall insulation under render systems. Twenty-five to 30 kg/m3: floor and roof insulation under load, cold-store panels, load-bearing packaging for heavy industrial goods. Thirty-five to 50 kg/m3: structural geofoam, under-slab insulation on expansive soils, high-load civil uses. Specifying one density class higher than the minimum “buys” long-term durability margin cheaply; specifying two classes higher wastes money that better engineering would save.

Processing Parameters That Separate Good Blocks from Great Ones

Converters tune five parameters. Pre-expander temperature (steam, typically 100–105 ℃) and residence time set the foam density — bulk-density feedback loops control both. Aging time (4–24 hours depending on bead and density) lets air replace the partial vacuum inside fresh beads; skipping aging is the classic cause of block shrinkage. Molding steam pressure and cycle set fusion quality — under-steamed blocks crumble at the saw, over-steamed ones collapse cells and gain density. Fill and venting discipline prevents density gradients and voids. Bead fraction matching — small beads for thin sections, large for thick — keeps surface quality and cycle times in balance. Plants that log these five parameters per block solve problems in minutes; plants that do not, chase ghosts.

Packaging Design Workflow

For packaging buyers, EPS design starts from the drop test, not the drawing: fragility of the product (its G-limit), the drop height of its logistics chain, and the cushion curve of EPS at the chosen density define the pad thickness and bearing area needed. Converters then mold corner blocks or full enclosures to that envelope. The economics surprise newcomers — molded EPS protection typically costs a fraction of the product it saves, and the weight savings compound through every leg of freight. Our technical desk supports this workflow with density recommendations and material data for the cushion calculations.

Flame-Retardant and Specialty Grades

Construction codes in most markets require foam passing fire classifications, and EPS meets them through flame-retardant bead grades — polymer modified with halogen-free or halogenated synergist systems that slow ignition and spread. Specifiers should name the fire class they must pass (national Euroclass, or the equivalent regional standard) rather than asking generically for “FR grade”, because formulations tune to the test regime. Beyond fire performance, specialty families include low-pentane beads for long-storage logistics, fine-fraction grades for thin-wall molding, and colored grades for product identification in multi-SKU packaging lines. Each specialty carries a processing note — our technical desk supplies the matching parameter sheet with the quotation so the grade lands running on your press rather than in a trial queue.

About this guide: property ranges and process notes summarize industry practice and our EPS supply specifications; blend guidance and troubleshooting live in the companion articles linked above. Converters planning bead programs can request grade-selection support, container loading plans and pentane blend schedules alongside their EPS quotation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What densities of EPS do you offer?

Bead grades targeting 10–50 kg/m3 finished density, selected with your press and application; construction grades run 15–30 kg/m3, packaging 15–20 kg/m3, geofoam and load-bearing uses higher.

How is EPS different from XPS?

EPS beads are molded after pre-expansion, giving flexible shapes at low cost with thermal conductivity around 0.033–0.040 W/m·K; XPS is extruded into boards with higher density, strength and moisture resistance. Insulation programs use both.

Does EPS lose pentane in storage?

Yes — warm, open storage lets blowing agent migrate, aging the beads. Keep bags sealed, cool and rotated first-in-first-out; our packaging and loading notes include the details.

Is EPS recyclable?

Mechanically recyclable into new products where collection streams exist, and construction take-back schemes operate widely; in-use energy savings over the building life are the strongest part of the sustainability case.

How do I match bead grade to my product?

Four dials — target density, bead size fraction, pentane blend and special grades — matched to press and product; our technical desk runs the selection with your team.

What is the packaging and loading plan?

25 kg bags or 800/850 kg jumbo bags; roughly 17 t per 20-foot container with jumbo bags and up to 26 t in 40-foot equipment, with loading plans provided per lot.
