Introduction:
Neopentyl glycol (NPG), white crystalline solid, odorless, hygroscopic. It is mainly used as a plasticizer, surfactant, insulating material, printing ink, polymerization inhibitor, and additive for synthetic aviation lubricating oil products in the production of unsaturated resins, oil-free alkyd resins, polyurethane foam plastics and elastomers. Meanwhile, neopentyl glycol is also an excellent solvent and can be used for the selective separation of aromatics and naphthenic hydrocarbons. The amino baking paint has good light retention and no yellowing. It can also be used as a raw material for the production of stabilizers and pesticides.
Preparation method:
Sodium formate method: Isobutyraldehyde condenzes with formaldehyde at 30-35℃, pH 9-11, and in the presence of an alkaline catalyst to form hydroxytert-butyraldehyde. It is then reduced to neopentyl glycol with excess formaldehyde under strong alkaline conditions, while formaldehyde is oxidized and reacts with the alkali to form sodium formate. The reaction solution is neutralized with formic acid, then dehydrated by vacuum distillation. The concentrated solution is subjected to stratified extraction to remove sodium formate, followed by cooling, crystallization and separation to obtain the finished product. 2. The hydrogenation method involves condensing isobutyraldehyde and formaldehyde to obtain hydroxyneopentaldehyde, which is then hydrogenated and reduced to obtain it.
Use:
Neopentyl glycol has a wide range of applications, mainly serving as a plasticizer for the production of unsaturated polyester resins, oil-free alkyd resins, polyurethane foam plastics and elastomers, an additive for high-grade lubricating oils, and other fine chemicals. Neopentyl glycol is an excellent solvent and can be used for the selective separation of aromatics and naphthenic hydrocarbons. Neopentyl glycol has water resistance, chemical resistance and weather resistance. Its amino baking varnish has good light retention and does not turn yellow. It can also be used as a raw material for the production of polymerization inhibitors, stabilizers and pesticides.
